This guide explains how we grade the condition of new and used books on mazibooks.com, so you know what to expect before you order.

Condition Scale

New

  • Brand-new, unused, and unread
  • Clean cover and pages
  • No writing, highlighting, or wear
  • Minor handling marks from shipping/storage may occur (rare)

Best for: gifts, collectors, brand-new copies

Like New

  • Looks almost brand-new with minimal to no signs of use
  • Clean cover and pages
  • No writing or highlighting
  • Tight binding, minimal shelf wear

Best for: “as close to new” at a better value

Very Good

  • Gently used with minimal wear
  • Light shelf wear (small corner wear, slight spine creasing)
  • Pages are clean; marks are uncommon
  • Solid binding

Best for: clean copies and great value

Good

  • Used and read, but still solid and fully readable
  • Noticeable wear (scuffs, creases, edge wear)
  • May include limited notes/highlighting or an owner’s name
  • Binding remains secure; no missing pages

Best for: everyday reading, study copies

Acceptable

  • Heavily used but readable and complete
  • Obvious wear on cover/spine; may include stickers
  • May include highlighting/notes/underlining
  • Possible aging, minor stains, or light water marks
  • Binding may be worn but remains usable

Best for: lowest-cost option, reference use

Common Notes You May See in Listings

Listing Note What It Means
Highlighting / Notes We note visible writing, underlining, or highlighting when present.
Ex-Library Copy Previously owned by a library; may have stamps/labels and cosmetic wear.
Remainder Mark A small mark on page edges from publishers/retailers; readability is unaffected.
Dust Jacket (Hardcovers) We note if included; jackets may show wear even if the book is clean.
Binding & Pages Unless stated otherwise, books are complete (no missing pages). Major defects are noted.
